Reflection. What to do when the waves of life threaten to sink us?

We may not be in a small fishing boat. Out in the lake at the mercy of the weather. We may not have great and fierce waves crashing in on us. The terror and roaring of mighty thunder may not be over our heads. Lightning striking its mighty and frightening bolts may not be around us. Thoughts of the power of the wind cause fear throughout our souls. For our very lives, we would be in fear and dread. We would be defenceless. Alone! At the mercy of the weather.

Sadly, all of us face times when our life is sinking. Suffering an ocean of pain and despair at times is our lot. Days when no matter where we turn all seems lost. We all cry out to Jesus in these trying times. In fear for our lives, we plead to our Lord. “Lord we are drowning. Save us.”

Jesus our Lord answers, “Ye of little faith.” We look timidly into our hearts. We realise how very right Jesus is. With honesty and openness, we see. Jesus is faithful and loving — ALWAYS. It is not Jesus who has failed us in any way. Even though He may not feel close by. Jesus always is. When feeling so terribly lost and alone. We are not. Jesus never leaves us alone. Jesus is always near to those who call on Him. Jesus is God the Son. God is love. God never leaves us to struggle alone. Jesus in our trials and times of heartache is close by. Jesus is nearby.

Scripture Readings: It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. (Deuteronomy 31:8, ESV)

Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20, ESV)

Jesus did not leave the disciples to battle their storm alone. Jesus was there with them. He may have been sleeping in the back of their small fishing boat. He was there with them for every moment of the storm. When needed Jesus awoke. When needed Jesus calmed the waves and stilled the winds. When needed Jesus saved His friends. Jesus pointed out to His disciples. It was not the storm that threatened. It was their lack of faith.

It is our lack of faith in Jesus that threatens to drown us. The storm was a mere tool for Jesus to display another of His miracles. Even the weather is under His mighty control. Jesus performed His miracle. So His disciples would believe in His sincere and unceasing love. Jesus’ beloved disciples were left in utter amazement. Their beloved rebuked the wind and raging waters. The storm itself obeyed Jesus’ command and calmed. In utter awe, the disciples praised the Holy Name of Jesus. He was there with them and with us, ALWAYS. He is.

Who is our Lord? Even the weather obeys the Word He speaks.

Scripture Readings: In Luke 8:22–25 (NIV), Jesus and His disciples were in a boat when a squall came down on the lake, putting them in great danger. Jesus rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and the storm subsided, leaving all calm. His disciples were amazed and wondered who this was, as even the winds and water obeyed Him12. (Bing, 17/08/2024)

Where is your faith? He asked His disciples. (Luke 8:25, NIV)

I have read about this miracle performed by Jesus. As recorded by Saint Luke many times. As have you, dear reader. Each time God the Holy Spirit blesses us with a new truth. Every time we read of Jesus’ miracle a new point of Jesus' love is revealed.

For instance, we pick on the words, Who this was, as even the winds and water obeyed Him?” We ponder on this eternal question. Who indeed was this that even the weather bowed before God the Creator? Naming God as the Messiah is somewhat limiting Him. He is this, true. Jesus our Lord is so much more. Jesus created all there is. This includes the storms with their roaring thunder and bolts of lightning. It is also true. Anything Christ creates. He also has total control.

Our Lord, our Redeemer and God created you and me. So it goes without saying He has total control over every aspect of our lives. All we need to do is hand over control of our lives to Him. Once done such blessed peace fills our hearts and souls. We have placed all our burdens at the foot of Jesus’ cross. All our anxieties and worries are placed on the shoulders of the Person who can carry them. Jesus is our Lord.

Scripture Readings: Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, NIV)

Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” (Psalm 55:22, NASB)

Conclusion. We are so blessed. We are loved. We are deeply and personally loved. We have a God who never leaves us to face our storms alone.

Sadly, life is as it is. Life has times when the waves of crisis crash over us. Days when the winds of tragedy threaten to blow us over. Moments when our lives feel we are sinking into the abyss of loneliness and despair.

Fear not. We are not alone. Our Lord, Redeemer and God. Jesus our eternal Companion never leaves or forsakes us. With Jesus, we are never alone. Jesus never leaves us to struggle through our storms alone — NEVER.
