I choose gentleness… Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I make a demand, may it be only of myself. Max Lucado

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. James 3:17

Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29

Paul Phillips

Paul’s story: “Pardon Me; Your Gentleness Is Showing” is lovingly written.

There’s a reason gentleness and self-control are gifts of the Spirit. I’m expected to put them into practice in His presence. Again and again, until they are as much a part of my daily routine as breathing and eating. Paul Phillips

Cara McLauchlan

Cara’s story: “Considering Gentleness — 3 Good Questions” is educational and interesting.

Here we see gentleness can be about celebration too, revelling in God’s goodness. Gentleness is showing others how you, along with God, are on their side. Gentleness means you are setting the tone of working with them and not against them. Cara McLauchlan

Picture Jesus sitting in a small town in northern Israel. Under the shade of a large palm. Surrounded by happy and chatty little children and their doting mothers. These little ones laughing and competing lovingly for our Lord’s attention.

These small innocent children were suddenly shoved aside by Christ’s devoted disciples. Just pushed away as if they were not worthy of Jesus’ love. Not worthy of His time and attention.

His beloved disciples have been with Jesus for some time now. Have they not realised that God is LOVE! That Jesus’ love is for everyone. Of course, this includes these precious little children.

Jesus gently and softly asks these children to be brought back to Him. Can you imagine the confusion among His disciples? The pure joy on the faces of His little ones. Jesus loves them. He really loves each of these, His little children.

Each child is gently and softly embraced by our Lord, Jesus. Jesus’ gentleness is exemplified in this scene. His gentle love for each child and mother. Touches their hearts with such tenderness.

But Jesus called the children to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Luke 18:16

You are touched by God’s gentleness each day. He gently holds you in His arms when you are sad or lonely. In His gentle embrace. His Holy Spirit comforts you in times of trouble.

Jesus, Himself is your perfect example of God’s love. God’s gentleness. How to extend true and pure gentleness to other people. Gentleness as you will find in God’s Word is a fruit of the Spirit.

Your children are needing your love and attention. You are busy doing what life demands. The still, small voice of God’s Holy Spirit speaks. You are urged to listen.

You call your children to come to you, in a soft, gentle and loving voice. You display Jesus’ love to these His little ones. Your children run to you filled with giggles and smiles of eagerness and happiness. They jump onto your welcoming lap. All eager to be loved and hugged by you, their one and only, mother. Your children sit closely around as your read softly to them from their favourite book: “Children’s Bible Stories.”

The gentleness they receive from you, their loving mother, is so natural. So true. It is not just part of who you are. It is an important part of who you are!

Picture Jesus tending to a newborn lamb. Abandoned by her mother. This tiny ball of wool is trembling with fear. Barely able to walk. Crying fervently and weakly for her mother. So very frightened.

Jesus this flock’s loving and ever-caring shepherd tenderly bends down. Softly speaking to His beloved baby lamb. Softly, tenderly and gently picks her up into His welcoming embrace.

The baby lamb immediately feels comforted. At peace. Jesus tends to and feeds His baby till she is able to care for herself. Even then His gentle and loving care is there for her as and when needed.

Can you picture the change for this baby lamb? She was abandoned by her mother who was supposed to nurse and care for her. Now she is in the gentle embrace of God Almighty. She is loved by Jesus the Son of God.

He will tend his flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs in His arms; He will carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. Isaiah 40:11

I love John 8:7 where the Pharisees bring a woman who was caught in the very act of adultery to Jesus. I feel they were trying to test Jesus. To see how He would treat this woman who they deemed as a sinner. They, I feel, had the crowd all stirred up and aroused. Ready to stone this poor and frightened one to death.

When they kept on questioning Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” John 8:7

Jesus out of pure love. Gently, but with the power, He held as God Almighty questioned the crowd. Who among you is without sin? He then can cast the first stone.

Imagine the love He gave this trembling woman. The look of compassion in Jesus’ eyes. No one else that day showed her anything other than hatred and anger. He softly and gently spoke words of love. Words of forgiveness.

Jesus the Son of God. Jesus, God Almighty. Didn’t bring wrath down from heaven on this sinner. He gently spoke to her words that changed her life completely. He forgave her sins. He cleansed her of all unrighteousness. He made her pure once more before her Heavenly Father.

As Jesus spoke those treasured words: “Go now and leave your life of sin.” John 8:10 His gentleness touched her broken heart and set her free.

How gentle Jesus was with this woman in John’s story is how gentle God is with you. His Spirit within you urges you to be soft and gentle with everybody you meet.

Remembering each person is God’s creation. Your gentleness shows them God’s love. Your gentleness may lead them to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour also. They may join you in God’s Heavenly Family.

Gentleness is not immediately entrenched in us when we first are adopted as Children of God. You have to struggle as I do. For the rest of your life. Gentleness is the attitude you display when loving and caring for other people.

There are so many verses in God’s beloved Word to help you gain the skills to be quieter, softer and tender in your dealings with people. When you turn to your Heavenly Father in prayer, His Spirit will teach you and help you. His Spirit will show you what is needed so you can be the gentle and tender person you long to be.

When Jesus sat quietly with His disciples teaching them all they needed to do to preach His gospel. He would have:

  • Put their needs before His own: Yes, lessons needed to be taught. The disciples were also His loved ones and each had needs.
  • He chose each word with care. With thought for each of these His loved ones.
  • He extended God’s grace to each disciple.
  • When questions were asked He answered softly, honestly and with love.

You will notice subtle and yet real changes in your life.

God’s Spirit is Himself working powerfully within you to give you the strength and courage needed.

God’s Spirit will comfort and help you when needed as you gently love the people around you.

Allowing God to subtly transform you into Jesus’ likeness. The image of God the Father.

You are showing the way to others who are lost. To the gentle and loving arms of Jesus.

God loves you and always will!
