Reflection. We live in a world of darkness. We have Jesus the light of God. He is the eternal light of life.

Scripture Reading: When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I AM the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12, NIV)

Jesus is God the Son. Jesus is saying, “I AM the light of the world.” With these words, Jesus is rightly proclaiming His divinity.

Let us travel back in time over two millennia. We are in Jesus’ days. In ancient times. When we could not change the darkness of night into light. Simply by switching on a lightbutton. It was the only source of light at night for these ancient people. The only light to keep them safe was a campfire or oil lamps.

Our Creator God gives all people the most wondrous of gifts—the gift of free will. We at the moment of our creation are granted free will. You and I are given the gift of choosing our way. We either choose the way of Almighty God and obey Him. Or we go our own way. And walk in the darkness of our sins.

First, Jesus’s being “the light of the world” means the world has no other light than Him. If there is going to be light in the world, it will be Jesus. It is Jesus or darkness. There is no third alternative. No other light. So He’s the light of the world in that there is no other light in the world. There is only darkness. (John Piper, 4th December 2017)

What does this mean? To those who decide to trust, obey and love Jesus our Lord. It means we must be strong in all we do and say. The Devil and the forces of darkness. Tempt us back into darkness. The Devil is constantly there. He is there whispering His lies. He is there to win us back into the darkness of our sins.

At the moment of our salvation. Our old selves were crucified with Jesus. Our old lives are dead and buried in the tomb of Jesus. We are risen anew with and in Jesus. We walk in the light of Jesus. We are now children of the light of Jesus. We strive with all we have to fight the forces of darkness. We strive with all the love in our hearts. To walk in the light of Jesus. Believing. Always believing. Jesus is the only light in the world. The glory of Jesus is the only way out of our darkness.

God, the Holy Spirit gives us the strength we need to conquer the forces of darkness. When the Devil comes tempting us with His lies and deception. God, the Holy Spirit teaches us and guides us with relevant Bible text. The more we rely upon God’s Spirit. The stronger and more courageous in the face of temptation we become.

Another tool in our arsenal against Satan and His demons. The Holy Word of God. The more we read, meditate on and memorise our somewhat worn Bible. The better armed against the dark forces of temptation we become. The Book of Psalms has so many verses which give us the arrows needed to pierce through our darkest hour.

The Gospels show how people reach out their hands to Jesus. The New Testament shows us Jesus walked among those who had lost their way. We see Jesus heal the hearts and souls of those who had walked in darkness. Jesus the light of the world. Heals your heart and soul with His love. Jesus’ love endures forever. Jesus’ light shines in the hearts and souls of those who love Him forever.

We read of Jesus loving and caring for each person in need. Jesus the healer of our hearts and souls. Jesus walks with us now. Jesus is the healer of our hearts and souls. Jesus’ love and His light lead us away from our darkness. Jesus and He alone is our light. Jesus and He alone shine our way Home to the Kingdom of God.

Scripture Reading: And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. (Genesis 1:3–4, KJV)

To abide and remain in the blessed light of Jesus. We must:-

Read your Bible or start a devotional to listen to God’s word and His plan for you. 1

Worship God and praise Him for the things He has given you and trust Him in what He will do in the future. 1

Be loving towards all, especially towards those who believe, as Jesus commanded. 2

Do what is good and right, even when it hurts, and avoid all forms of evil. 23

Be firm and formidable in your resolve to follow the Lord in everything you do, and stay focused on God and His light. 3 (Bing, 10/08/2024)

Let us work briefly through the above steps.

  1. Read the Holy Word of God often. To gain a correct idea of the sacred and divine plan and purpose of Almighty God. Yes, God Almighty has a unique plan and purpose for each of His children. When we search the Bible diligently and often. In combination with consistent prayer. We learn of His plan for us. In obeying His plan we find true peace. We fit into the puzzle of God’s plan for the entire human race.

If every man and woman followed God’s plan. What a wondrous world this would be. A world of harmony and peace. A world of love for our fellow man.

2. When we truly and sincerely love all God’s people. With all the love we have to give. We serve and glorify God in all we do and say. We do this by truly loving each person God places on our path.

3. With all the strength within us. With the help and strength of God the Holy Spirit. At all times we obey the Holy Law of God. Be holy and righteous in all we say and do.

4. Focus on our Lord Jesus and His light. Follow the ways of Jesus always. Follow the example of Jesus. Treat others with the love of Jesus. When tending to and caring for others. Do so with kindness, tenderness and compassion. As did Jesus the light of the world.

This musical rendition includes the lyrics. Once more will touch your hearts.

The Light of the World is Jesus” is a Christian hymn by Philip P. Bliss, written in the 19th century. This hymn harkens to the Bible verse of John 8:12 in which Christ stated, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Bliss proclaims this message from Jesus as the lyrics repeat “The Light of the World is Jesus” to end each stanza.
