Open Our Hearts, O Lord! God’s Angels Rejoice Over Us
Someone precious to Almighty God is lost. This person is found. God the finder is extravagantly happy.
Scripture Reading: The Parable of the Lost Coin
Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents. (Luke 15:8–10, NIV)
Reflection. Almighty God rejoices over each person who truly repents.
The parable of the lost coin teaches that God rejoices over the repentance of a single sinner, just as the woman rejoices over finding one lost coin. Jesus used this metaphor to illustrate God’s persistent love and the importance of every soul to Him1. The lesson of the parable is that once we are convinced of a truth, we should use that knowledge to get rid of what is foolish or false in our hearts and minds, in order to regain the lost treasure2.
