Reflection. In our days of darkness. In our times of sorrow. Jesus’s light and love shine in our hearts.

Scripture Readings: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5, NIV)

While God’s light is said to be “unapproachable,” Jesus makes us whole and we can approach the Father through Him. Jesus is the very “radiance of the glory of God” (Hebrews 1:3). John testified of Jesus, “We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and only Son who came from the Father.” This is the Light promised by the prophets. (Amanda Williams, January 14, 2024)

Even the greyest of our days. WHEN. The rain comes down in bucketloads. Its noise is deafening on our rooftops. The thunder overhead. Shakes the house. To its very foundations. The lightning. Its blinding strikes. Penetrates through our drawn curtains.

Even the darkest storms. The most frightening storms always come to their ending. The roaring thunder. The blinding lightning. The pouring rain surely ends. No matter how threatening they may seem at the time. Darkness always gives way to light. Fear always gives way to love.

The sun always shines through. We step outside to greet her. It is oh! so true. Light always overcomes darkness. Love always outweighs fear. Even the most violent storm gives way to glorious sunshine—perhaps the artistry of God’s perfect rainbow. Greet us as we step outside.

May our Lord Jesus be praised. Even on the greyest of our days. When the rain of our tears pours to the ground. When the storms of life. Drown out the love of Almighty God. When the noise all around us. Drown out the still, small voice of God, the Holy Spirit. When the brightness promised by earthly rewards. Drowns out the true rewards of God’s humble servants. Jesus’ light always comes shining through. Jesus’ love and His light overcome the darkness. Jesus’ light drives away all fears. Even the greyest day is brightened by the light of Jesus. Jesus' light and His love bring hope.

In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. (Ephesians 1:7, NIV)

In Whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:14, NIV)

Jesus brings His light into our hearts. In times when we desperately need Jesus the most. Jesus comes into our lives, to bring us new life. When we were lost in our darkness of sin. Jesus gives us His light of Redemption.

In our modern age. Darkness can be overcome. Simply by the click of a switch. Or the use of a torch. Or even to use our mobile phone. For darkness to come. These devices must be switched off.

This is the same with the light and love of Jesus. We have times when the darkness of our sins places sheer fear in our hearts. We struggle to find a candle or a torch to bring us a little light. We feel trapped. Unable to escape our self-imposed darkness. This time of spiritual blackout strikes fear into our hearts and souls. It matters not how we try rationally to figure a way out.

We pray. We pray and then we pray some more. We kneel before the Heavenly throne. We seek the forgiveness of Almighty God. We beg for the saving grace of Jesus our Redeemer. Jesus once more shines His light of love and hope into our hearts. Once more the light of Jesus has overcome the darkness of our sins.

Most people have time spent by the seaside. Time spent wandering on their favourite beach. Some may spot a lighthouse in the distance. All lighthouses are placed in a strategic spot. So their light is seen by ships navigating dangerous and rocky locations. The men and women on these ships owe their lives to the light shone by these lighthouses. These lighthouses beam their protection into the most dangerous places. Provides safety and, protection to all who pass their way.

Jesus is our lighthouse. It is Jesus’ light that shines into our hearts.

Scripture Reading: When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ (John 8:12, NIV)

Turn away from our old ways. Turn away from the darkness. Give no place in our hearts for earthly rewards. Turn only to Jesus, His light and His love.

When we walk in the light of Jesus. There is no place in our hearts for earthly pleasures. We follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Teacher. We read of Jesus in His Gospels. We follow His example. What He would do. We do.

Jesus shone His inner light onto all He met. Christ’s light fell onto all those who He cared for and tended to. People, individuals and crowds were drawn to the light of Jesus. Jesus’ tender and compassionate love drew people to Him.

We also are drawn to the light of Jesus. Our hearts yearn to be in the presence of our Lord Jesus. We need to walk daily in the light of Jesus. There is no place in our hearts now for mere earthly pleasures. We follow the Two Great Commandments He teaches us. We pray as He taught us in the “Lord’s Prayer.” We follow in His footsteps. We preach the good news of the Kingdom of God. We show this in our actions and words. The value and urgency of true repentance.

Conclusion. The light of Jesus. Shines in our hearts. Removes all our fears. Takes away the darkness of our sins. The light of Jesus guides us Home to Almighty God.

Nathan Pacheco’s rendition of “Light Within.” Touches our hearts. Reminds us that Jesus’s light brings us closer to Home.
