Jesus is the Light of the World
We are a child of God. Shining His light into the hearts of others.
Scripture Reading: In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in Heaven. (Matthew 5:16, NET)
Reflection. “Light in the Darkness.” As children of God, we are to be righteous and holy. So others still living in their darkness. See the love of God in all we do and say.
Scripture Readings: You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:14, NET)
In the darkness a light shines for the godly,
for each one who is merciful, compassionate, and just.
It goes well for the one who generously lends money,
and conducts his business honestly. (Psalm 112:4–5, NET)
It is so very true. Since Adam and Eve ate their apple. Since man first committed their first sin. Mankind has walked in his darkness. In the realm of darkness has humanity walked. Under the realm of the Devil has mankind chosen to abide. In their sins has mankind wandered and been separated from their Creator. Lost in the darkness of their sins. Humanity struggling to find its way Home. Mankind has loved darkness. Humanity loved sins and the earthly rewards they bring. Humanity is overcome by darkness and the power it brings.
Jesus is God the Son. God is love.
Scripture Reading: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:12, KJV)
Dr Tom Constable says, “The light of life figure stands for what dispels the darkness of ignorance and death. Jesus was claiming that whoever believes in Him will enjoy the light that comes from God’s presence and produces life.”
This light metaphor was common through the Israelites history. They associate light with God’s presence. Throughout the Old Testament God reveals Himself to the Jews with light. From creation to the burning bush and in many of the celebrations, light symbolized God’s presence. (Jeffery Curtis Poor, January 16, 2023)
Let us picture ourselves back in the 1st Century. In the days when Jesus was teaching this lesson. When Jesus first told the people He is the “light of the world.” In those days when nighttime fell. It was not just a matter of clicking on a light switch. No, when night came. It was truly DARK.
These people truly related to Jesus’ notion of being lost in their darkness. To venture out at nighttime then. Was very dangerous and scary. There were no street lamps to guide and keep them safe. It was at night that thieves and killers plundered their evil trades. It was at night the Devil was at His worst.
This is why the people of Jesus’ time needed the light of love. In the ancient times of Jesus. When it was nighttime. Darkness fell with a vengeance. For His audience. When Jesus spoke the words. “I AM the light.” They believed it was a big deal.
It is DARK still for humanity. Mankind still is lost in the darkness of sin. Jesus our Lord and Redeemer is showing the world. He and He alone is our light. Jesus is our guiding force through this world of sin and dark forces. Jesus came down from Heaven to show us the way back to Almighty God. Jesus came to Earth to preach the good news of the Kingdom of God.
What exactly is Jesus teaching us in John 1:45?
Our Lord here makes His powerful claim. “He is the light of life.” Jesus is clearly stating to all who choose to follow Him. He is our way out of the darkness of sin. Jesus is the way back to the presence of Almighty God.
[Jesus] He’s pulling from their history to show that just as God was the light to their ancestors, He’s their light today. He’s here to light the way, to lead us from the darkness we are stuck in. (Jeffery Curtis Poor, January 16, 2023)
Jesus our Lord and God is powerfully making the sacred and divine claim. He is God the Son. That God has come into the world. God is here. Let us not miss the power and the love behind Jesus’ claim. Let us place the power behind this claim firmly in our hearts. Jesus is the light of the world. The darkness of this world cannot overcome the light of Jesus.
This declaration by Jesus. He is the light. Is such a glorious promise. When we choose to accept and believe this promise. We no longer stumble around in the darkness of our sins. We no longer have to search for love, joy, peace, and kindness. These are all gifts and blessings from Jesus.
Walking in the presence of Jesus our Lord and Redeemer. We are surrounded by His love, joy, peace, and kindness. He never promises us a life of ease and endless pleasures. When we read of Jesus’ life in His Gospels. We recall His life was far from easy. We see His life was that of a true nomad. Jesus had no permanent home to call His own. He had to rely at times on strangers. We see times when Jesus was ridiculed and abused. Many times our Lord was misunderstood. Yet, at all times Jesus’ love, joy, peace, and kindness were always His way.
This is the true light of Jesus. Christ’s shining light is His love. Jesus is God the Son. God is love.
In our hearts. Is an earnest desire to be true and faithful children of the light.
