John the Baptist was a faithful servant of God. A forerunner of the Messiah. John baptized repentant sinners with the waters of the River Jordan. He preached on the One to come who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. “I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11)

Let us join the hundreds. Perhaps thousands stumbling their way to John the Baptist. You and I have trudged wearily thus far. Out to the River Jordan. Joined the throng of repentant Jews. Joined the curious onlookers drawn by this strange man. Crying out in the wilderness. Like all the others, you are eager to hear this man’s preaching. To hear the call of this man who lives his whole life serving God in the wilderness. To hear his God-sent message of repentance. John’s message is one of repentance. To seek the coming kingdom of God. “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 3:2)

You have watched so many who have realized the reality of their sinful ways. They asked John the Baptist for baptism. The full submersion of water to cleanse them of their sin. To be made clean once more and righteous before God.

Suddenly there is a call for your attention. Upon the hilltop. A man is also making His way to the River Jordan. Is He, as all the others here to listen to John preach? Or, maybe He is one of the repentants? Needing redemption from sin?

The crowd makes way. There is something special. Something different about this man. John immediately recognizes Him. Even from a distance.

You may have heard John speak of the One to come. The “Lamb of God.” The divine ‘Sacrifice’ or ‘Atonement’ for the sin of the world. A sacrifice like no other in all of Jewish history. The Lamb of God is to pay the ultimate price. The supreme sacrifice for all repentant sinners throughout time.

John the Baptist’s cry in the wilderness is recorded in God’s Almighty Word.

This Man, the Lamb of God, Jesus. Approaches the River Jordan. Comes to John the Baptist to be baptized by him. What’s this you see? John is reluctant. He says to this Man: “it is ‘I need to be baptized by you.(Matthew 3:14b) He knows within his heart who this man before him is. The Holy Spirit within John reveals this to him. The Holy Spirit speaks to John. Jesus is indeed the One he has been waiting for. His crying out in the wilderness is all about this man.

Jesus’ reply changes all of history. Opens the path to redemption for all of mankind. To all sinners who repent forever more. Jesus replied: “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15a).

The message for all believers is Jesus’ obedience to God. In consenting for John to baptize Him in the waters of the Jordan. This message of wonder. This message to all who will accept it. This message is to all who repent of their sins. Baptism is for the forgiveness of sins. The Lamb of God replaces man’s need for this water ritual. At this time. For these people, it is in the future.

Jesus by consenting to John’s baptism is preparing Himself. Making Himself a perfect sacrifice for you, me and the world.

Consenting to be baptized Jesus is obeying His Father’s plan. In answer to Jesus’ obedience, His Father acts in approval. He opens the heavens as a visual sign. As a way to God. Jesus as God the Son is in and always has had fellowship with the Father. This opening at this time manifests the reality of that fellowship. To be resounded throughout history.

When He arose from the water. At that precise moment. “… heaven was opened” (Matthew 3:16). Let us pause for a while and consider what a miracle this is. Up till this moment, heaven was closed to all mankind. Jesus through His love. Jesus by sacrificing Himself on our behalf. Opened heaven's doors in a more powerful way than ever before.

These people didn’t yet know it. But when the Holy Spirit raised Christ from the grave. The doors of heaven welcome the glorified bodies of Jesus' followers at His Second Coming. (See Romans 8:23) The Holy Spirit is our pledge and our comfort till then.

Now you are a witness to a miracle that has never been seen. The three Persons of the Holy Trinity together. As the heavens open the Person of the Holy Spirit descends from heaven. He lovingly settles on Jesus.

God’s Holy Spirit you see here is symbolized as a perfect and brilliant white dove. This dove signifies the anointing of Jesus by the Holy Spirit. Jesus receives the Holy Spirit, as the Christ, the Anointed One.

You will never forget this image. This miracle. Then another gift from God. Another wonder from heaven. The voice of God Himself. Speaking lovingly and proudly “.. out of the heavens, ‘This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)

You have just heard God Himself validate to you and to all those present. God, Himself has proven for all mankind through all time. This Man. Jesus, the Christ, the Anointed One. Is, My Beloved Son. God Himself pronounces to one and all. Jesus’ deity. That Jesus, the Christ is God Almighty.

You have not only witnessed the baptism of Jesus. You have been in the presence of all the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. Are you humbled? I know that I am. I have been in the presence of the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. Praise be to God!

You have seen the Holy Spirit descend and settle on Jesus, God the Son. You have heard God call Jesus, His Beloved Son. This is a day you and I will never forget. God, the Creator of the entire universe. God our Creator. He announces to you. To me. To the world that Jesus. The Christ. The Anointed One is His Son.

Bow down with me and worship Jesus. Pray with me to Him our thanks for all He has done for us. He is our divine and supreme sacrifice.

This water baptism was the beginning of Jesus’ three-year ministry. This baptism by John the Baptist was His first step to His cross for you. This water baptism was His journey to resurrection. To His conquering of death and sin on your behalf.

The door of heaven is open. Jesus your beloved Saviour is waiting for you. To be glorified along with Him at His return.

Jesus’ baptism is a beautiful account of the loving union of the Holy Trinity — Father, Son and Holy Spirit. At the moment that Jesus arose from the River Jordan:

  • Heaven was opened.
  • God’s Holy Spirit descended from Heaven and settled on Jesus.
  • God’s voice was heard.

Jesus is baptized as a symbol of giving His obedience and His will to His Father. It is the beginning of His earthly ministry. God’s Holy Spirit dwells in Jesus’s human nature from the beginning. From eternity to eternity!

God loves you and He always will!
