And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever the Spirit of truth. John 14:16–17a
God Almighty. God the Son. Jesus Christ who became Man. Chose to die in your place. Replaced the crown of Heavenly sovereignty with the crown of thorns. Jesus your beloved Saviour. He did it just for you.
The night before Christ’s crucifixion in the upper room. Jesus tells His beloved disciples of His imminent death and resurrection. Of His return to His Heavenly Father. The hearts of Jesus’ disciples are breaking. Sadness is their unbearable companion. Darkness fills their souls and their hearts.
Jesus as God Almighty reads their hearts. Feels their sorrow. Shares their pain. He now makes a promise that changes the world. Leaves a legacy that changes forever the future of all believers.
Changes the relationship between God and humanity. Jesus promises these disciples an inheritance of divine love. A love like nothing ever witnessed in the history of mankind.
Jesus asked His Father to send a Replacement. God answers. God your Heavenly Father who loves each and every one of His children. Agrees! God sends His Comforter. His Helper. God sends His Holy Spirit.
This gift from God. Jesus’ replacement is not only for these disciples. These believers. God’s Holy Spirit is for all believers throughout time.
This is Jesus’ Last Will and Testament to you. His inheritance to all obedient followers and believers. Jesus knew at that time He was returning to His Father in the Heavenly realm.
Jesus loved and worried about His disciples. His disciples have been with Him for three long years. Accompanying Christ on long, dusty hot journeys. These disciples have witnessed miracles performed lovingly by their Master. Jesus has healed a leper. Forgiven a Samaritan woman, bringing her joy and salvation. Jesus rose Lazarus from death after three days.
These men did not yet know it. But, Jesus, Himself is crucified, buried and after three days rose again. Resurrected He conquered death and sin on your behalf. He rose victorious from the grave. And will spend many more days with His disciples.
Now He tells these followers. These faithful believers His time to depart from them was very close. Jesus was concerned about their future without Him, their Lord and Master.
Jesus loves His friends so much. He is not about to leave them alone. To fend for themselves, friendless and helpless. He implores His Father to send a replacement. To send a true Comforter and Helper. This someone. This Replacement. This gift from God. Is the third person of the Holy Trinity. God the Holy Spirit.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13
Jesus tells His disciples and us to stop worrying. The Comforter God is sending will live within all faithful and obedient believers. He will always be with you. He never leaves you alone.
On this night before Christ’s crucifixion, these disciples tremble with full understanding. He is leaving. They are so very, very afraid.
Jesus is not concerned about Himself. His love for them is proved once more. Jesus wants. He desires to leave a message for these faithful followers. To comfort and support them. To strengthen them as He hangs dying on His cross. Jesus so dearly loves them. He is sending them a replacement.
Jesus is not concerned about the agony of His own death. He is sending them a replacement to be even closer to them than He. Jesus was with His disciples. Spent three unforgettable years ministering to others in their presence. He had changed their lives forever. He had loved them as no other person ever had.
Jesus’ inheritance, God’s Holy Spirit is not mere lessons. As wonderful. As amazing. As life-changing as they are. In of themselves.
Jesus’ legacy is Personal. Jesus’ legacy is a Person. Jesus’s legacy is the third person of the Holy Trinity. This proves without a shadow of a doubt that the Holy Spirit is a Person, not an “it.” A person who can be hurt. A person who can be grieved. A person who can be and should be loved and worshipped by all.
God’s Holy Spirit is there to guide you and teach you God’s truth. The legacy of Jesus is such a powerful tool for each of His believers.

John 14:26 states that the Holy Spirit will also teach and remind us of all Christ’s lessons. What a blessing this is. Our humble brains can in no way recall all of Jesus’ teachings. The Spirit and God’s Word are always available for you to search and meditate upon.
Being utterly dependent upon Jesus’ promise to empower you through the Holy Spirit. Is only possible because Jesus kept His promise through God His Father.

Other legacies Jesus, our Lord left as an inheritance. Christ left behind people who believed and preached the gospel of the kingdom of God. Jesus left His Word and His teachings. His church, that was a few hundred people at the time of His death.

… the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:17
This verse is part of Jesus’ farewell to His beloved disciples. Comfort to them when they face the coming days of despair and darkness. Jesus nurtured these disciples with His tender caring and love.
