Gethsemane, Garden of Sadness. Garden of Love. Christ Prayed.
Christ, on the eve of His crucifixion. In the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus wept and He prayed.
Gethsemane.
I only want to say,
If there is a way,
Take this cup away from me.
For I don’t want to taste its poison,
Feel it burn me.
I have changed,
I’m not as sure, as when we started. Then, I was inspired,
Now, I’m sad and tired,
Listen, surely, I’ve exceeded expectations.
Tried for three years, seems like thirty,
Could you ask as much from any other man?(Michael Crawford)
Introduction. Christ our Lord, our God in Gethsemane wept. Jesus our beloved. On the eve of His crucifixion. In His Garden of heartbreak. In our Garden of love. PRAYED.
Scripture Reading: Then He said to them, ‘My anguish is so great that I feel as if I’m dying.’ (Matthew 6:38a, NIV)
The blessed Garden of Gethsemane is located in Jerusalem. On this night which changed the world. This night which changed all mankind forever. This night was still, peaceful and oh! so quiet. Even the olive trees stood in proud vigilance. As if in prayer with our Lord. For the Lord, their Creator was there among these mighty and majestic trees. These proud and ancient olive trees stood tall. As their creator prayed and He wept bitter tears. These ancient trees stood as in one with their Creator, God. As He WEPT. As God the Son PRAYED.
WHY??? Oh! Why did our beloved Jesus weep? Jesus knew what horror awaited Him on the dawn. Christ’s dawn would bring to Him hatred, cruelty and much humiliation. And yes, even death upon His wicked and cruel cross. Death at the hands of the people He loves the most. Jesus wept bitter tears in His Garden of heartbreak and of sorrow.
In Matthew’s rendition of Christ’s night before His crucifixion. We read of our beloved Lord’s final hours. Jesus’ last hours before His betrayal, trial and yes! His death. Such a cruel and horrid death it was. CRUCIFIXION.
You and me. In our heart and in our mind see Jesus praying and weeping in His garden of sadness. Jesus, weeping in His garden of heartbreak. For our Lord knew all the horror which awaited Him in the dawn.
Indeed, our beloved Lord, our God was broken-hearted. For Christ knew no other could pay the price for mankind’s salvation. Jesus, the pure and the innocent Lamb of God. Knew what cruelty and what pain the dawn would bring to Him. In complete obedience to the will of His Father. Our Lord, our God walked forward, onto the dawn.
Scripture Reading: No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from My Father. (John 10:18, NIV)
This night of prayer. Jesus’ night of weeping and of such undeserved sorrow. Shows to us. Even our Lord Jesus was reluctant to suffer pain and His fear of death. The true miracle this night shows to one and to all mankind. Jesus at all times is obedient to His Father, Almighty God. Christ Jesus, God the Son. Obeys His Father even to the point of death. Jesus hung on His cruel and wicked cross. In complete and eternal obedience to His Father, God.
God the Son always in complete obedience to the Almighty One.
Scripture Readings: My food, said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.’ (John 4:34, NIV)
For I have come down from Heaven not to do My will but to do the will of Him who sent Me. (John 6:38, NIV)
We know sadness and heartbreak. May Jesus our Lord be praised. The sorrow Jesus experienced. In His garden of sorrow. We shall never experience.
Scripture Reading: Sit here while I go over there and pray. (Matthew 26:36c, ESV)
The poignant and heart rendering tale of the eve of Christ’s crucifixion. Shows to us that Jesus loves us so. Jesus sacrificed His very life. Jesus shows it is okay to be reluctant to suffer. To fight pain. To actually fear death. You and I remember. Jesus is God the Son. Jesus is Fully Man capable of suffering pain and yes, even death.
Scripture Reading: For this reason, He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful High Priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:17, ESV)
When we walk our life of faith with our Lord Jesus. We faithfully believe Jesus fully understands. For He also has suffered pain and heartbreak. Christ Jesus has also tasted the horror of death. There is nothing in our life we face. Jesus does not understand. There is nothing in our life Jesus cannot help us through. NOTHING.
What a Friend We Have in Jesus.
What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry,
everything to God in prayer!(Joseph Medlicott Scriven, 1855)
Garden of Gethsemane. Our Garden of Love. For without Jesus’ faithful obedience to Almighty God. We would be left wondering in the darkness of sin.
Before there was a Calvery. Before our Lord, our Savior, our God hung on His tree. There was His night in the Garden of Gethsemane. Christ’s night of sorrow and of heartbreak. Was mankind’s night of hope and of love. This night heralded God’s magnificent love plan. The next day changed the future of mankind forever.
The Garden in which our beloved Lord wept and prayed. Is to us a garden of love and hope for eternal life. Jesus chose to accept the cup placed on Him by Almighty God.
Christ our Lord faced Judas, His betrayer. Jesus did not turn away His cheek. Our Lord accepted the betrayal KISS. All torture, humiliation and even death, in our stead. Jesus accepted for us. The Garden of Gethsemane. Our garden of love, hope and eternal life. Through and with Christ Jesus our Lord.
Scripture Reading: Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest Him and lead Him away under guard.” (Mark 14:44, NIV)
The Garden of Gethsemane is of great significance to all mankind.
Jesus Christ our Lord retreated to His Garden of sorrow to spend time with His Father. God the Son chose the Garden of Gethsemane to be with Almighty God. Jesus was with God on His night of anguish and such agony. For all mankind Jesus’ night in the Garden of Gethsemane. Brings to us hope, love and the promise of eternal life.
Christ Jesus prayed to Almighty God throughout the night. You and I praise our Lord, Jesus each day. We give thanks to God the Son for His garden of love, always. Jesus prayed and wept in His garden of sorrow. So, we have our garden of LOVE forever.
